NEWTOWN — Monsignor Bonner played a near flawless first half against Chestnut Hill Academy Saturday afternoon. The second half was almost as clean — with the exception of two big mistakes.

The Friars turned the ball over once in the third quarter and once again in the fourth quarter. Each miscue led to CHA touchdowns as the Blue Devils erased a seven-point deficit to defeat the Friars 27-21 at Episcopal Academy.

“They outplayed us,” Bonner quarterback Jimmy Haley said.

Leading 21-14 late in the third quarter, the Friars attempted a lateral at their own 37. Haley’s pass eluded Abraham Jaward and was a fumble by rule. Four plays  later, Cedric Madden, who rushed for 190 yards on 23 carries, scored the third of his four touchdowns to tie the game at 21.

On Bonner’s next possession, Malik Jones fumbled the ball at the CHA 40. Madden scored with 3:59 to play in the game on a 49-yard scamper down the left sideline to give the Blue Devils the margin of difference.

The Friars scored on all three of their possessions in the first half, but could not find the end zone in the second half. The closest they came was the last time they touched the ball. They marched to the Blue Devils’ 11-yard line. On fourth down with less than a yard to go, CHA stuffed Haley at the line to seal the win.

“I thought we moved the ball well except for the two turnovers in the second half, which really hurt. We just couldn’t get into a rhythm in the second half,” Bonner head coach Tom Oropeza said.

The Friars were without senior running back Ismir Gibbons. Gibbons, who rushed for more than 150 yards in Bonner’s 33-13 win over Upper Darby last week, injured his hamstring in the game’s second half.

The Friars featured five different runners Saturday. Jones led the group with 48 yards on eight touches. John McGilligan gained 42 yards on three carries. And Haley ran the ball 15 times for 38 yards. He also scored two touchdowns on keepers of 1 yard and 5 yards, respectively. When Haley did go to the air, he completed 13 of 22 attempts for 202 yards. Bonner’s third touchdown was a 14-yard completion to Paul Pfeffinger.

“Jimmy is one of our leaders on the offensive side of the ball and we expect him to carry the ball and throw the football each week,” Oropeza said. “He’s a big part of the game plan.”

Saturday’s game was originally scheduled to be played in Chestnut Hill. Because of heavy rain earlier this week, the game was moved to Episcopal.

The artificial turf at Episcopal provided a fast track for both teams. After holding CHA on the game’s first series, Bonner completed a nine-play, 92-yard drive, ending in Haley’s 1-yard run to take a 7-0 lead.

After the Friars started the scoring, each team traded touchdowns for the remainder of the half. CHA answered with a 35-yard touchdown run by Madden. Haley’s 5-yard run followed. Madden then scored from 12 yards out. And Haley’s TD pass to Pfeffinger rounded out the first-half scoring.

SPRINGFIELD — The disappointment of a 35-28 loss to Unionville in the season opener was still fresh in his mind as Kyle Keyser took the field Friday against Conestoga.

It was a memory the senior from Garnet Valley wanted to erase forever and did.

Keyser caught four passes, three for touchdowns, as the Jaguars rolled over the Pioneers, 42-12, in the Central League opener for both teams. Keyser finished with 133 yards receiving and 26 yards on three rushing attempts to go with his three touchdowns. That effort was good enough to earn Keyser Central League MVP honors during the weekly meeting of the Delaware County Football Coaches Association.

It was a night for receivers as Laquan Lambert of Chichester took home the overall MVP award in the Del Val League. Lambert pulled in nine passes for 142 yards and two scores as the Eagles dropped a heartbreaking 22-20 decision to Archmere.

Monsignor Bonner quarterback Jim Haley was named MVP among the independent schools. Haley ran for two scores and threw for another in a 27-21 loss to Chestnut Hill Academy. Haley completed 13 of 22 passes for 202 yards and ran 15 times for 38 yards.
